Hiatus

It's been a week since my last run. This heat is preventing me from getting outside to run. I'm really bummed to be "benched" from my running plan. But, with the forecast calling for temps in the mid-upper 80's, there is just no way... The lows are in the mid 60's, which would be fine, but it would also mean running at 5am. I am not functional in the mornings and that just won't work.

So, here I am, a runner without a run... waiting for cooler temperatures...
Who knew that summer would pose such challenges?

20 + 5

Run 37: Monday 7/13/09
Weather: low-mid 60's and cloudy

After a nice nap, I got out to the park and had a great run! 20 + 5 minutes, covering the full path, including an incline and a bumpy grass field.

I noticed that my breathing is getting easier. I was hoping to be able to go 30 minutes straight, but I needed a 3min walk to recover on my way back. Maybe next time?

I'm thinking more about the 5K I'm hoping to do in September, but I'd REALLY like to be able to run the whole way. I'm not sure if I'll be ready. With the increased temperatures, my running days have not been as consistent. I guess we'll have to wait and see.

25 minutes straight, and no ipod!

Run 36: Wednesday 7/8/09
Weather: mid 60's and cloudy with a few sprinkles

I was exhausted today. But after a little nap, I headed out to the park. As soon as I got there, I discovered that my ipod battery had died. *gasp*
...I briefly considered heading back home before realizing how silly that sounded. Certainly, I can run without music! It brought to mind an image of a simpler time. Looking at the green grass and simple benches in the park around me, it could have been 1949 instead of 2009. I tend to daydream about the simple life of my grandparents in the 40's, and this set a quiet, mindful mood for my run.

So, I ran, sans musical accompaniment. And ran and ran and ran... for 25 minutes straight! I was more than ready to stop by the time I got to 20 minutes, but pushed myself to continue for the full 25.

This day had been an emotionally challenging and taxing one for me, and I was so proud for getting out there and running anyway. Running IS cheaper than therapy, after all. :)

Wind for the Weary

Run 35: Monday 7/6/09
Weather: mid 60's, partly sunny and WINDY

It's amazing what a lower temperature and a lot of wind will do for my endurance!! It was an awesome run today; really spectacular. I ran on a boardwalk over the lake, with the wind whipping by. The evening sun was reflecting off the water, and kite-surfers were out enjoying the blustery day. I loved it so much, I ran the boardwalk twice.

I ran 7min, 10min, and 7min, with 3min walk breaks inbetween.

HOT today!

Run 34: Saturday 7/4/09
Weather: 80's and full sun

I haven't gone running in a full week. I got food poisoning on Sunday and suffered for days. I'm still getting my full strength back (and the ability to eat normal food). So, today was my first day back out running. But boy, was it hot!!

I managed to run 5 minutes after my warm up walk, and another 3 minutes after a brief recovery. I hoped to do more, but I'm happy that I got out there at all! Gotta keep in the game, know what I mean? I'll get back out there again in the next day or two.

Run 33: Friday 6/26/09
Weather: low 70's and sunny

I ran 15 minutes straight and took a brief break.

Thriller came on my ipod, ironically, a day after Michael Jackson passed away. (A song that I added to my playlist only weeks earlier.) I ran my last 5 minute lap in honor of MJ. Despite any scandalls later in life, you were an icon. Your music and dance has had a deep and lasting influence on my generation. Love you or hate you, you will be remembered.

10 Minute Mile

Run 32: Wednesday 6/24/09
Weather: upper 60's and mostly sunny

I didn't exactly have a plan when I hit the trail today. I just knew that I've been trying to work speed into my runs. I decided to time how long it takes me to go a mile or half mile, and pushed myself to go faster than I would normally. Until recently, I haven't paid attention to speed at all... just whatever it takes to KEEP GOING.

I ran a full mile in just over 10 minutes! The only way I managed that was by really increasing my speed for the last 2 minutes. Then, after a short walk break (as I was decidedly out of breath from the aforementioned effort), I ran a half mile in 4:40. Once more around a half mile loop in 5:20.

I guess that means that at any given time, I am running somewhere between a 9 minute mile and an 11 minute mile. Not bad, for a beginner. Shoot, I'm just happy to be running at all! :D
